This tool assumes about 75 gallons of water use per person per day, a common household planning figure, and multiplies daily gallons by your water hardness to get daily grains removed. Days between regenerations is the softener grain capacity divided by daily grains. Most softeners reserve part of their capacity and regenerate on a meter or a fixed schedule, so the real interval is usually shorter than this raw estimate.
